Lula and Fernando Haddad defeated the ferocity of the white whale

Like the coordinator of the engine room of a large ship, not like a calm captain of a tourist boat, Lula publicly maintained that interest is not a fatality of a celestial mechanism of a mercantile nature, and that the cost of money should seek a fair mediation – balance between the global market factors that determine their cost and the need to spend on social investments.

These, which justify the nature of the State, must respect the humanization of legitimate law in constitutional democracy, place the ruler in a system of power that he cannot and must not, under penalty of betraying his mandate, transfer to bureaucrats of any nature, especially those who left a fascist and genocidal government, like those who are now at the country's Central Bank.

By demanding that this ambiguity enter into the debate on government policies, Lula began to unify the fragmented agendas (some of them strange) from the beginning of his government, and create a new axis of “concertation”: without economic victory and combating tax inequalities and social, the fight against fascism fails, because it only breathes on the self-esteem destroyed by hunger and unemployment, associated with the culture of intolerance that is established there: on the one hand, it stimulates in the upper middle classes and in the rich in general the hatred of the disinherited that they themselves created with their class privileges and with their oligarchic parties and, on the other hand, it encourages the poor to seek compensation outside the “kingdom of this world”, to be exploited once again by the religions of money.

On the whaler "Pequod", Captain Ahab's desire for revenge against a whale that - on another hunting mission - mutilated him, leads the ship's crew to a paroxysm of fear and insecurity. In the icy seas of the north, Ishmael, the narrator, and Ahab - the Captain with his wooden leg and his skin-deep hatred - and the white whale Moby Dick, intersect their lives in one of the greatest novels of modern literature. Its author, Herman Melville, wrote another masterpiece, the short novel (or story), Bartleby - the clerk, where the tolerance and control of the human will in the sociability of work are tested to the extreme. Both complete each other, in order to understand our current historical drama, whose solution is woven by the new oarsmen of the country's economic reform: Lula and Fernando Haddad, in the midst of a hegemonic dispute over the destiny of our democracy.

Moby Dick (1851) is a saga about the empire of force and the neurosis of the will. AND Bartleby – published in 1853 (its first part) – praises procrastination, as some critics classified it. The work deals with the mysterious bureaucratic accommodation of an employee, in a Wall Street law firm, who above all intrigues and surprises his contractors, whose favorite phrase – when they demand a job – was: “I think it's better, no”. Brought to the present, the literary works can be seen as a parable of our political drama, after the electoral defeat of Jair Bolsonaro, which occurred in favor of democracy, but which did not completely reject its perverted socio-economic model.

Surely 1\3 of Lula's electorate, in the second round, was pushed to its limit, to renounce Bolsonarism. And they did so, not because they rejected his liberal reforms or because they were against the “general armament of the people” and against the indistinct slaughter of young black people from the periphery, identified for them as bandits, but it was a contingent that transitioned to Lulism in the electoral process, because he felt uncomfortable with the presidential stupidity during the Pandemic, with the increase in hunger and with corruption, which raged with much more strength in the Brazilian State. Nor was it out of any appreciation for democracy, but rather for the rejection of a fascism that was already losing its “charm” in the upper middle class.

Ahab, in the "Pequod", generates fear, instability, permanent crises laden with multiplied anxieties; Bartleby – in his Wall Street office – generates fascination and doubts, due to his controversial personality, whose denial of the real world is, at the same time, an alienation and a protest. Aahb never thinks of dropping an anchor to fix his "Pequod" in the center of nothingness in the icy seas of the north (in the icy seas of the north "one is always in the center"), and Bartleby never thinks of a phrase that is not a repeated protest. alienating from the life that capitalism has reserved for him. These points, separated by a desert of theories and words, which accumulate knowledge and real-life sensibilities, show that between the reigning anxieties in the “Pequod” and the absolute denial of alternatives, in Bartleby’s voice, that people – contrary to whales and the surprised contractors – can choose between alternatives.

Aahb is the integral protest of absolute revenge on a being of nature, the white whale, who will never be morally affected by hatred multiplied by force, because this being only works according to its primal nature (as the market would say); Bartleby is the neurotic retreat of the defeated, always isolated in the festival of negations, who cannot face the Balearic “nature” of the market, which requires certain attitudes, to which he says he “prefers” not to do anything that would be his duty: because certainly understands “not worth it” or “not possible”, “no alternatives” (as the Washington consensus would say). Bartleby is the impotence of the human, exiled in the inertia of an annihilated subjectivity.

The fiscal anchor of Fernando Haddad and Lula is the ingenuity of politics. Between these two extreme reasonings there is, in the first hypothesis, the conception that the strength of Ahab's political will would be enough to annihilate the white whale, simply determined by a generous political desire that would lower interest rates and thus "anchor" stability in growth, what would come of it; in Bartleby's second hypothesis (“I think it's better not”), there is the answer of total impotence, which considers that there are no policies against the material logic of the market. And that this is a second floor of nature, mechanically projected into the consciousness of humans. Lula and Haddad won the big initial “round” and returned Jair Bolsonaro to his unhealthy insignificance. The rest is yet to be built. And it has already started.
