Edward Said, in orientalism, reports that until the end of the XNUMXth century, geography was a “boring and pedantic” field of knowledge. But in our time it has become “the most cosmopolitan of all sciences”. Politicians who behave like statesmen and travel the planet, opening doors and extending their hand, talking to rulers about the need to form a world political front to combat hunger and the rise of the extreme right, in defense of democracy, understand that without understanding geography it is impossible to do history. Without arguing humanist values, the traditional oratory about citizenship never goes beyond the barrier of hypocrisy.
Just as capital always knew that it needed new markets to be explored, Leon Trotsky recognized that it was not possible to build socialism in a single country. Solidarity must have an expansionist and collaborative character at the international level, among oppressed countries. Likewise, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva knows that it is not possible to build a just and egalitarian nation in isolation. After six years, under the coup paws of Michel Temer and the genocidal boots in the pandemic / ecocide in the Amazon rainforest by Jair Bolsonaro, the unforgivable ostracism to which we were subjected is gone. However, it left sequels, setbacks, dirt on the carpet.
Now another genocide carried out with premeditation comes to light in the press, that of the original Yanomami ethnic group, the result of illegal mining that (de)kills the forest and infects the water with mercury. As found in locus President Lula: “Adults weighing like children, children dying from malnutrition, malaria, diarrhea and other diseases. This is thinking with genuine geopolitical flair.
The topic involves fiscal issues, the size of economies and the role of central banks. Latin America represents 5% of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). For a comparison, the European Union which is the world's largest currency union, the euro, comprises 15% of the world's GDP. In February, Lula is scheduled to travel to Washington, at the invitation of US President Joe Biden. In March, she will travel to Beijing to meet Chinese President Xi-Jinping. In summary: habemus presidentum.
