Photo essay and brief commentary on the demonstrations against the repeal of the legal abortion legislation
Thursday, 27/10/2020, was the seventh day in a row of strong protests in conjunction with a general women's strike across Poland.
The photographs are of popular demonstrations that have been taking place in recent days in the country's capital, Warsaw.
Poland's abortion law has long been considered one of the most restrictive in Europe. On Thursday 22.10, the conservative right-wing party (Law and Justice), winner of the last elections, instead of following the legislative path, through a vote in parliament, used the constitutional court, composed mostly of members of the party, to further restrict the abortion law and consequently diminish women's rights.
Since then, demonstrations against the Polish conservative government have intensified and gained support from many sectors of civil society, becoming one of the most expressive popular movements in recent years.
New protests are planned for the next few days.
